UK Registry Data Suggests Benefits of Medical Cannabis for Insomnia
A new study published in PLOS Mental Health (August 2025) reports promising results for patients with insomnia treated with medical cannabis. Researchers analyzed data from 124 participants in the UK Medical Cannabis Registry. The findings showed significant improvements in sleep quality, reduced anxiety levels, and enhanced quality of life within the first month of treatment. Benefits continued up to 18 months, although the effect size decreased over time. Treatment was generally well tolerated, with fewer than 9% of patients reporting mild or moderate side effects such as fatigue, dry mouth, or dizziness. The study highlights the potential of cannabis-based medicines as an option for managing insomnia but emphasizes the need for larger clinical trials to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness.
